Betty Vaughn

January 20th, 1923 – January 2nd, 2015

Betty E. Vaughn, age 91 of Canton, formerly of Astoria, IL, passed away at 7:01 a.m. Friday, january 2, 2015 at Graham Hospital in Canton. She was born on May 19, 1923 in Canton, a daughter of John and Edna (Dunning) Opper. She married Harold Vaughn on January 1, 1942 in Kahoka, MO. He survives.

Also surviving are her son Gene (and Judy) Vaughn of Washington, IL, two grandchildren, Suzie (and Kevin) Root and Mike (and Rebecca) Vaughn, and five great-grandchildren, Karsen, Rhys, and Owen Root and Carly and Ella Vaughn.

Betty was preceded in death by her daughter, Sandra Sue Vaughn and her brother, John Opper.

She worked for the US Postal Service for 34 years, retiring in 1988. She worked at the Ipava, Summum, and Astoria Post Offices.

Betty was a member of the Ipava OES #226, the Astoria American Legion Auxiliary, and the Astoria United Methodist Church. She was an excellent seamstress, making clothes for her family. She enjoyed baking birthday cakes for her family, as well. She was a loyal Cubs fan.

Services will be held on Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at 11:00 am at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria. Vince Opper will officiate. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the services. The Ipava OES #226 will provide Eastern Star services. Interment will be in the Astoria Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Astoria Fire Department.
