Nicholas L. Hamm

September 30th, 1946 – August 9th, 2016

Nicholas L. "Nick" Hamm, age 69 of Astoria, IL, passed away at 9:48 am on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 in the ER at the Mason District Hospital In Havana, IL. He was born on September 30, 1946 in Canton, IL, the son of Auston Jack and Mary Josephine (Markley) Hamm. He married Linda C. Dorich on June 24, 1967 in Astoria. She survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Todd (and Jennifer) of Elkhart, IL, Chris (and Megan Kirby) of Astoria, and A.J. of Springfield, IL, one daughter Heidi (and Justin) Elbe of Macomb, IL, and seven grandchildren; Griffin Bloyd, Lance Hamm, Jersee Hamm, Emma Hamm, Nicholas Elbe, Josie Elbe, and Lucie Elbe.

Nick was preceded in death by his sister, Julia Vallejo.

Nick graduated from Astoria High School where he played football and developed his work ethic. He earned his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Vocational Education from WIU in Macomb. He taught welding at Astoria High School and Spoon River College in Canton. He also worked at Buckhart Mine in Canton and Elm Mine in Elmwood, IL. He worked for 39 years at Dynegy Midwest Generation in Havana as Maintenance Foreman, retiring on May 3, 2016.

Nick was an avid reader. He enjoyed travel and working on his machinery. He also enjoyed helping out his neighbors.

Services will be held on Friday, August 12th at 11:00 am at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria. Pastor Robert Green will officiate. Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 11 from 5-8 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Illinois Neurological Institute at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria or the South Fulton Rebels Booster Club. Cremation rites will be accorded following the services.
